Marketing Challenges Await for New York City FC

Two of the biggest names in sports have joined forces to purchase Major League Soccer’s 20th franchise, the league announced Tuesday.

Manchester City of the English Premier League and the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball will own an expansion team called New York City FC. Barring any setbacks, the team will start playing in 2015.

In some respects, it’s the biggest MLS announcement since David Beckham signed with the LA Galaxy in 2007. The story made headlines around the world, and MLS spent most of Tuesday morning trending worldwide on Twitter.

“This is a transformational development that will elevate the league to new heights in this country,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a press release.

MLS Power Rankings: Week 10

Editor’s note: Each week, the Soccer Perspectives MLS Expert Panel will rank Major League Soccer’s 19 teams from best to worst.

For the first time this season, two teams tied for No. 1 in the Soccer Perspectives MLS Power Rankings. FC Dallas won the tiebreaker against the LA Galaxy due to more first-place votes (three to two). The Montreal Impact jumped ahead of the Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City into third, but the rest of the top five remained the same. At the other end of the spectrum, D.C. United became the fifth team this year to occupy the dreaded No. 19 spot.

1. FC Dallas (6-1-2, 20 points)
FC Dallas smallThose who are still not convinced FC Dallas can continue playing so well will point to Saturday’s 2-2 draw as evidence. Looking in clear control with a two-goal lead, Dallas let an 18-year-old rookie burn them badly twice in the span of four minutes.

MLS Power Rankings: Week 8

Editor’s note: Each week, the Soccer Perspectives MLS Expert Panel will rank Major League Soccer’s 19 teams from best to worst. Due to travel and other commitments, some of the voters were unavailable last week, and the rankings were not updated. We apologize for the inconvenience. This week’s “Recent results” section will include all regular season matches since the rankings were last published. The votes were added prior to Wednesday’s match between the New York Red Bulls and Sporting Kansas City.

The LA Galaxy dropped out of the top spot in the rankings for the first time since Week 1. The new leader? FC Dallas. With the Houston Dynamo holding the second spot, Texas is ruling the league for at least this week. Meanwhile, LA fell to fourth behind a resurgent Sporting Kansas City, and the New England Revolution and Chicago Fire are stuck at the bottom of the rankings.

1. FC Dallas (5-1-1, 16 points)

The LA Galaxy held onto the top spot after escaping with a 2-2 draw at Toronto, but the Texas teams made up some ground after the Montreal Impact’s first loss of the season. The Galaxy and Houston Dynamo each had two first-place votes, while FC Dallas had one. The New York Red Bulls made the biggest improvement by jumping four spots after a 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Union. The winless Chicago Fire remain at the bottom of the rankings after a bye week.

1. LA Galaxy (2-0-1, 7 points)

USA Holds Mexico to Scoreless Draw at Azteca

For only the second time in 14 World Cup qualifying matches, the U.S. national team came away from Estadio Azteca with a point Tuesday.

The makeshift back line and backup goalkeeper Brad Guzan did just enough to hold on for a 0-0 draw in Mexico City. The clean sheet involved solid defending and a dose of good luck. Mexico was furious with two potential penalty kicks that were ignored by referee Walter López, while Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez uncharacteristically missed a couple of point-blank opportunities to give El Tri the lead.

US Defeats Costa Rica 1-0 in Blizzard

Clint Dempsey’s 13th-minute goal in a Colorado blizzard held up as the winner against Costa Rica – capping off what will surely go down as one of the most memorable weeks in U.S. national team history.

The story Friday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City was snow – lots and lots of snow. The match commissioner decided to go ahead with the match despite a blizzard in the forecast. The field was covered by the opening whistle, and the conditions further deteriorated as the night continued. The weather made for some incredible scenes, including people rushing onto the field to clear snow off the lines at every brief stoppage in action. U.S. defender Geoff Cameron even helped at one point late in the match.

In the first half, the U.S. moved the ball surprisingly well considering the snow and recent inability to keep possession. In the 13th minute, Jozy Altidore created space for himself and shot near the top of the box. The ball deflected off Costa Rica defender Roy Miller and landed at Dempsey’s feet for the finish.
