The Vancouver Whitecaps defeated Toronto FC 1-0 to open the season at BC Place on Saturday.
The goal came in the 60th minute when Vancouver’s Lee Young-Pyo played a sharp one-two with Kenny Miller, who passed the ball to newcomer Daigo Kobayashi. The Japanese playmaker laid the ball off to Gershon Koffie for the finish just inside the near post.
Toronto FC surprisingly took control of the match in the early minutes and ended up with more than half of the possession. However, neither team could create many chances – resulting in only five shots on goals for the teams combined.
TFC, which has had a tumultuous off-season, has been rushing to sign players before the start of the season. Welsh striker Robert Earnshaw got the start only a day after signing with the club.
The news was not all good for Vancouver as veteran defender Jay DeMerit went out with an injury after eight minutes. He has been struggling with injuries during preseason.
