North Carolina won the NCAA women’s soccer national championship for the 21st time in school history.
The Tar Heels defeated Penn State 4-1 on Sunday at Torero Stadium in San Diego. UNC got off to a quick start on both halves. Kealia Ohai scored 71 seconds into the game with Taylor Schram scoring for Penn State in the 19th minute. Hanna Gardner scored 48 seconds into the second half for the match-winning goal.
Satara Murray and Ranee Premji scored in the second half to seal the win.
Unlike the men’s tournament, the women’s format is similar to college basketball with four teams sharing each seed number. No. 2 North Carolina knocked off three one seeds – BYU, Stanford and Penn State.
Penn State was the first Ben Ten team ever to reach the final.
