Kenny Miller took advantage of a mistake by the Columbus Crew defense as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Crew 2-1 on Saturday at BC Place.

Daigo Kobayashi struck first in the sixth minute with an incredible 30-yard shot that easily beat Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.

The Whitecaps could have easily scored three or four goals in the first half. Nigel Reo-Coker misfired on a golden opportunity in the 39th minute. A Brad Rusin header struck the post and hit Gruenebaum in the face before being cleared from the box by the Crew.

Columbus shocked the home crowd less than a minute into the second half when Jairo Arrieta took a pass from Ben Speas and caught Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon going the wrong way. His shot hit off Cannon’s legs and deflected into the goal.

Vancouver took the lead in the 57th minute when Gruenebaum casually rolled the ball down the middle of the field to Gláuber. The new winter signing struggled to control the ball, and Miller swooped in for the steal.

Vancouver had to survive a frantic final few minutes. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Speas’ hard cross hit Dominic Oduro in the head just about a foot from goal. The ball popped up into the air.
