Houston Defeats Santos Laguna 1-0 in First Leg

The Houston Dynamo will take a 1-0 lead into Mexico after Brad Davis scored in the 89th minute of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match against Santos Laguna.

The teams traded opportunities and possession in the first leg at BBVA Compass Stadium on Tuesday night, but clear chances were few and far between until the final minutes of the match.

In the 89th minute, Corey Ashe was given room to run down the left side of the field. He slotted a pass into the box to Davis. The midfielder – who came off the bench at the start of the second half – fired a low shot to the far post.

Houston should have scored a second goal just a minute later, but Will Bruin’s pass was late and got caught under newcomer Andrew Driver’s feet.

Houston’s best chance in the first half came off a Bobby Boswell header in the 18th minute. Following a corner kick, Boswell headed the ball to the ground, but it was accidentally blocked off the line by teammate Warren Creavalle.

Santos nearly scored in the next minute after Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall cleared the ball to Herculez Gomez. The U.S. international striker found Darwin Quintero, who sent his shot well over the crossbar.

Houston head coach Dominic Kinnear missed the match due to suspension from the group stage last year, while his club extended its home unbeaten streak to 32 matches in all competitions.

The second leg will take place next Wednesday in Torreón, Mexico, at 8 p.m. ET. The clean sheet at home means a single goal for Houston next week would force Santos to win by two.
